Meditations on First Philosophy

This course does not retell the six meditations in order. It takes the book apart as an argument: what survives once one generalisable rule of doubt has filtered out every doubtful belief, and whether what survives can underwrite the rest; whether each step is a premise Descartes chose, something true by his own definitions, or a textual claim refutable by the original; and where the argument gives a confident and wrong answer. The last chapter audits the first six.

结构交底
本课交付的结构
A generalisable rule of doubt, through striking out whole classes of belief at once, turns the impossible task of checking every belief into a finite one.
It carries to audit sampling, code review and risk screening: filter by class rather than item by item; it fails where items resist classification and must be judged one at a time.
核心承诺
01Doubtful counts as false Whatever can be doubted is treated as false, as a method; this is a filtering rule, not a state of mind.
02Clear and distinct is true Whatever I clearly and distinctly perceive is true; the whole rebuilding half of the book rests on this.
03A cause is no less than its effect The reality an idea represents cannot exceed the reality possessed by its cause.
掌握路径
L1Restate and bound
学完能
  • Say which class of belief each of the three levels of doubt removes
  • Show that 'doubtful counts as false' is a method rule, not a psychological description
L2Separate definition from text
学完能
  • Tell whether a step is Descartes's premise, a definition, or a textual claim
  • Point to where a definition is presented as a discovery
L3Find the cracks and connect
学完能
  • State the exact shape of the Cartesian circle and its two exits
  • Say whether it replaces, constrains or adds to your existing structure
概念地图
Clear and distinct
