Nietzsche · Part IV, the higher men and the ass festival · 1885
A company of guests higher than the crowd and short of the overman gather in the cave and end by kneeling before an ass and reciting a litany. He argued against treating followers as an achievement; the cost is that Part IV was printed privately in forty copies, so almost nobody read this self-rehearsal at the time.
Turn
The soothsayer's line in Part IV · 'your last sin is pity'
What the book's ending has to overcome is pity for these higher men. The line turns the questioning round on the protagonist one last time — the same move as the two-way tool of chapter 3.
Turn
Two appropriations in the twentieth century · nationalism and self-help
The literary estate was edited and published by his sister, who had dealings with the political movement of the day; this is documented reception history. It gives this course a control: a text with no criteria cannot defend itself when pushed to opposite conclusions.
Counterexample
Chapters 1 to 6 of this course
The object of this audit. Block 3 (derivation) and block 5 (cracks) of each chapter are the entry points; what matters is whether that chapter's one textual claim stands, and how much structure this course added.

What definition in disguise looks like here

Chapter 2's 'three cannot be squeezed into two', chapter 4's 'values are produced' and chapter 5's 'all retributive doctrine is revenge' come out of one shape, and this course gives it a name: definition in disguise. The reason for flagging it is practical: the three come out of 'negation', 'valuing is commanding' and 'powerlessness must find another account', and all three happen to be among the most quoted lines. Left unflagged, a reader carries the force of the prose over onto the content.

机制A proposition true by definition, through being presented as a discovery, lends the definition's certainty to the conclusion.
可迁移性测试
Move it to job levels: define 'senior' as five years at this company, then announce that this company's senior engineers are all experienced. It sounds like a judgement about people and repeats a definition. The isomorphism breaks in that a levelling standard sits in a handbook and can be challenged, while these definitions sit between metaphors.
机制03

How much structure this course added

In the other two philosophy courses the derivations rearrange arguments the original already made. Here it is different: the book hardly argues, so every derivation block contains something this course put there. That part is collected under the name reconstruction. Chapters 3, 5 and 6 each carry one premise expressly marked as ours. The marking is not modesty but an audit convention: it tells the reader which sentences to take up with Nietzsche and which to take up with this course.

机制A reconstruction, through supplying argumentative structure for an image, makes it checkable and also adds what the original lacked.
可迁移性测试
Move it to writing a spoken request up as a spec: only once written can it be reviewed, and the writing necessarily adds judgements the requester never made. The isomorphism breaks in that the requester can be asked to confirm, while here there is nobody to confirm with.
机制04

Reception history as a control

This book also supplies material rarely available elsewhere: it has been pushed to opposite conclusions, and one of those routes depends on the posthumous compilation. The use is concrete: a reading that needs material the author never published is booked in its own column, and only what holds on the texts he did publish enters this course's main ledger.

机制A reception history, through showing one text pushed to opposite conclusions, makes 'what the text can settle' a checkable question.
可迁移性测试
Move it to a licence dispute: the same document is cited by both sides for opposite claims, and what to do then is not to keep citing but to check what the document says and which lines were added later. The isomorphism breaks in that a document has version control, while this estate was arranged by someone else's hand.
Derivation05

Counting the categories in chapters 1 to 6

This section totals the category of every derivation step in the first six chapters, and reaches one conclusion: this course's textual risk sits in six propositions, all in texts he published.

Chapters 1 to 6 have 4 derivation steps each, 24 in all
Counting convention: only the steps inside block 3 of each chapter, not the cracks or debate blocks.
12 steps are tagged [identity] and 6 are tagged [assumption]
In chapters 3, 5 and 6 one of those assumption steps carries a premise added by this course, each already marked in its own chapter.
6 steps are tagged [textual], exactly one per chapter
In an interpretive discipline this is the only class that can be refuted by the original.

Cracks in this reading

争议地形07
本书主张
This course's position: read the book as a way of asking that can be lifted off it, and mark line by line which structures the course supplied.
另一种看法
Another line holds that this is a poem: its work is to change the reader's condition, not to supply a checkable structure, and the few propositions left after dismantling are precisely the least important part of it.
分歧扎在
The disagreement is rooted in what you mean to take away. For the experience, dismantling is a loss; for carrying a structure elsewhere, not dismantling means carrying nothing. This course wants the second, and that is a choice determined by the goal, not a refutation of the other reading.
什么证据能裁决
What would settle it is transferable output after reading: have two groups read each way, then ask each to say, of a new value claim, who set it and in what situation. If the dismantling group is markedly more accurate, this course's position holds on its own terms.
No such comparison exists, so this course's position counts only as an untested methodological choice. And this book is less suited to dismantling than the other two: a real part of its force is in the tone, and that part this course cannot deliver and does not pretend to.
Textual test08

The 'all 6 are locatable in texts he published' reading as a testable specification

The reading under test: the passages the 6 textual claims of chapters 1 to 6 rest on are all in texts Nietzsche published, with no dependence on notebooks or the posthumous compilation.

Edition: Thomas Common's 1909 public-domain translation, cited by section title, with a standard translation alongside; notebooks and the compilation in a separate column
Fixed in advance; the two columns may never be counted together.
Decisive passages: the original passages referred to by step 4 of block 3 in each of chapters 1 to 6
Specified in advance and matched one by one.
What counts as located: the content the claim rests on can be found by section title in a text he published
Findable only in notebooks or the compilation is booked as unpublished material, in its own column.
What the rival reading predicts: if this course's reconstruction mainly tracks material arranged by others, several claims should be findable only in the other column
The two readings differ observably in how many land in the main ledger.
Pre-registered failure condition: fewer than 4 of the 6 are locatable by section title, or any one of them stands only on unpublished material
The threshold is fixed in advance and may not be adjusted after the check.

Which slot it hangs on
挂在哪个槽位The conclusion you already hold is probably 'books like this are mainly for inspiration' — a judgement about what reading yields. This chapter goes at how that is cashed out.
Does this chapter (a) replace 'for inspiration', or (b) constrain it: cashed out as being able, in a new case, to name the legislator and their situation?
慢变量Register two slow variables: for how many rules you can name the legislator and the situation, and in how many of those you separated out what you were conjecturing. Look at the second first.
小结10
本章小结
01Of the 24 derivation steps in chapters 1 to 6, 12 are definition unpacked and 6 are assumptions; only 6 textual claims carry risk.
02Definition in disguise appears three times, each writing something that follows from a formulation as if it were a discovery.
03Chapters 3, 5 and 6 each carry one premise supplied by this course; the reconstruction content here far exceeds the other two philosophy courses.
04A text not preventing a reading is not a text asserting it; but 'no criteria' is itself a property of the text.
05Which step counts as textual is this course's own call, so this block does bookkeeping and not evaluation.

?Is 'risky steps equal total minus identities minus assumptions' (a) the arithmetic of the classification or (b) a textual claim refutable by the original?
?Is 'all retributive doctrine is revenge' (a) definition in disguise or (b) an independent discovery?
