Using it as an instrument for weighing
What §341 supplies is not a proposition awaiting proof but a demon's question, put to one man at night. The phrase that later carries it is eternal recurrence. On this reading its place is not to describe the world but to weigh something: put an option under that question and what you would settle for separates at once from what you actually want. The basis for this reading is solid, and it is not the only reading.

What matters in it is not the plot but the allocation of speech: on the book's heaviest step the protagonist never opens his mouth. This course uses that arrangement as evidence — the text underwrites no reading, and that is checkable rather than interpretive.
