He argued against writing into objects a necessity that experience never supplies; the cost is that the universality of mathematics and natural science loses its footing too. Reasoning back to conditions

Kant's master question is not what the world is like but what makes a certain kind of judgement possible. The question is itself a device: it takes in as settled that judgements of this kind do hold, then asks backwards what that requires. Playing that role is the synthetic a priori judgement. Its place in the argument is as a starting point, not a result — Kant never defends it, he only asks after its conditions; so every conclusion in the book carries a tail: valid inside those conditions only.

The isomorphism breaks in that a system's conditions are written in a deployment document, while the conditions of knowledge have to be argued out.

The price of the turn

The price of the device is printed on the same page: if the conditions are on our side, knowledge holds only of what has passed through them. Kant gives the far side of the device a name — the thing in itself. In the argument it is not a mysterious object but the device's remainder: whatever does not pass through our forms can still be pointed at in thought and cannot be reached by knowledge. Read it as 'another set of things' and the whole second half of the book goes wrong.

The logical-empiricist line holds that the necessity of mathematics and logic comes from convention and definition and is analytic, while the general propositions of physics are fallible empirical hypotheses. On that view the class of synthetic a priori judgements is empty and the reasoning-back has no starting point.

The disagreement is rooted in whether there are judgements that are both necessary and informative, not in whether forms do any work. Both sides grant that mathematics is necessary; they differ on whether that necessity counts as extending knowledge.

What would settle it is progress in the foundations of mathematics: if every theorem can be derived by pure logic from explicit axioms and definitions, the theorems are analytic and Kant's starting point lapses. That step can be rechecked independently, without reading Kant at all.
The balance tips toward the empiricists: formalisation reduced large parts of arithmetic and geometry to consequences of axiom systems. But that defeats only the example, not the device; and the plurality of geometries gave 'the form is optional' a version Kant did not foresee. What is missing is a synthetic a priori judgement whose example is not mathematics.
